Our Commitment to Children and Young People
IWSS is committed to creating an environment where children and young people feel safe, supported and respected. Queensland’s new Child Safe Organisations Act strengthens this commitment. It sets clear expectations for how organisations protect children from harm during any interaction with services, programs or staff.
As we embed the National Child Safe Principles into our culture, we are working to build a shared understanding of what a child safe organisation looks like in practice. This includes our policies, our behaviour and the way we design and deliver services.
You can read more about the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations on the Australian Human Rights Commission website.
What the Child Safe Standards Are
The Child Safe Standards outline the expectations for organisations that engage with children and young people. These standards guide our effort to create safe environments and align with both legislation and sector requirements.
A child safe organisation:
• Prioritises children’s safety and wellbeing in all decisions.
• Respects the rights of children to be heard and to participate.
• Takes proactive steps to prevent harm, including abuse or neglect.
• Responds quickly and appropriately when concerns arise.
You can read more about the 10 Child Safe Standards on the Queensland Family and Child Commission website.
What This Means for IWSS
Putting the standards into practice requires clear actions across the organisation. We are strengthening our systems and daily practice to build a culture where safety is consistent and visible.
This includes:
• Policies and procedures. Updating internal policies to include mandatory reporting, codes of conduct and risk management.
• Recruitment and induction. Including child safety considerations in hiring, reference checks and Working with Children Checks where required.
• Everyday practice. Interacting with children and young people using trauma informed and respectful approaches.
• Environment and culture. Creating physical and online spaces where children feel safe, supported and valued.
